The largest lake in Colorado is only 45 minutes away. Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States. With 14 square miles of fishable surface as well as boat rentals and marina services, you can find and land the lunker you’re after. The serious enthusiast can find an abundance of fish year round. But make sure you bring your auger and thermals for the ice fishing in the winter.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is only 15 minutes away from Montrose. The Gunnison River below the canyon, through it, and above it is designated Gold Medal & Wild Trout Water. Fishing guides and tours are available through local outfitters. Access is also found in the National Park as well as the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness area. No other canyon in the United States is as deep, steep, and narrow as the Black Canyon. There are places deep inside where sunlight almost never reaches–but the trout don’t seem to mind.
If you can only fish near Montrose once, go the Gunnison or Blue Mesa. When you come back, you’ll find that you just scratched the surface. Mountain lakes and reservoirs abound. Nearby Crawford, Ridgeway, Morrow Point, Silverjack, and Crystal Reservoirs provide an abundant yield for able anglers. The San Miguel River and Uncompahgre River provide unmatched views and nearby isolation for avid fishermen and women.
